ABOUT

Join Running Adventures for a multi day ultra running challenge along the wonderful Cumbria Way in the beautiful Lake District.

Our 'Wild Journeys' are a bit different to our usual trail trips (where we base ourselves in one place). They are adventurous challenges, along iconic trails, staying in different places each night, working together as a team to complete an epic journey. It will be a small group, meaning very limited spaces.

On day 1 (approx 27 miles | 48 km), we will meet early in Ulverston, ready to begin our epic multi day ultra running journey along this iconic trail. After loading our overnight bags into the van (included in price) we will set off on our adventure.

Day 1 sets the tone for the whole Cumbria Way, easing us in with a long but largely runnable journey from Ulverston, into the heart of the Lake District. Leaving the iconic start marker behind, the route rolls gently through open countryside before climbing towards Beacon Tarn, then drops down to glorious lakeside running along Coniston Water. A classic stretch via the picture postcard scenery of Tarn Hows follows, before weaving through Elterwater and finishing in the dramatic surroundings of the Langdale Valley. After a challenging but unforgettable first day, we will settle into our accommodation in the Great Langdale Bunkhouse.

Day 2 (approx 20 miles | 32 km) is a classic Lake District stage, linking two iconic valleys with a mix of high drama and smooth, flowing miles. Leaving Great Langdale, the day begins with the short but punchy climb over Stake Pass, quickly rewarding the effort with expansive views and a fast descent into the green folds of the Borrowdale Valley. From here the route softens, following riverside and woodland trails before joining the shoreline of Derwent Water for a relaxed and scenic run into Keswick.

With a big climb early and gentler terrain later on, it is a satisfying and sociable day that lands perfectly for a comfortable overnight in the heart of the Lakes at the Denton Bunkhouse in Keswick.

Day 3 (approx 26 miles | 42 km) is a long but satisfying finale, as the route leaves Keswick and heads north. The day begins with remote and quiet running through Skiddaw Forest before climbing steadily onto the open fells to reach High Pike, the highest point of the Cumbria Way. From here the character changes, with a gentle, runnable descent through the welcoming village of Caldbeck and across rolling farmland that gradually leads you out of the Lakes. The miles tick by smoothly on forgiving terrain, delivering a strong and memorable finish into the historic city of Carlisle where we will book ourselves into comfortable accommodation and spend a night celebrating our achievements.

You will be joined on the whole journey by your host, Matt Buck, we will take on this challenge as a team and support each other the whole way, this is not a race but it will be a big challenge, which we will undertake together.

CRITERIA FOR ENTRY

This trip is tough, it includes rugged terrain, lots of miles and elevation, and takes place in an unforgiving environment, we want everyone to be safe and we need to keep everyone together. Please see the following requirements for entry.

- Within 6 months of the challenge. You must complete at least one marathon distance run (26 miles | 42 km or further). You can join a Running Adventures guided ultra run (included in entry) to help you prepare, this counts.
